A Client Blogs About Her Headshot Photographer Search

Finding the right headshot photographer is no easy task. Not only do you have to like the photographer's style and body of work, you have to jive with them!  In fact I think that's one of the most important things to consider when shopping for a photographer.

If you don't feel comfortable chatting with a photographer face to face, chances are pretty high that you won't be able to open up to them when you're on camera.

A recent client Kat Primeau blogs about her journey in shopping for a headshot photographer.  Until reading her post a few minutes ago, I had no idea I was one of six photographers she met with before choosing Busken Studio.  I'm honored.

Shoot with Bill Dawes

I had the pleasure of shooting the very funny comic Bill Dawes a few weeks ago.  Bill has done it all - from Stand-up Comedy specials, to guest stars on Law and Order, to grabbing the lead in a few Feature Films, and Soaps, he's the veritable Swiss army knife in show biz!

If you're a soap fan you might recognize him from his current recurring role on "All my Children" where he plays the role of "Val".  You can catch Bill on stage week days at the Laugh Factory in Hollywood where he's sure to make you laugh and squirm.  Check out his very funny and definitely offensive comedy channel on youtube

My Shoot with Jason

Today I shot actor / director Jason Fisher.  You might know Jason's familiar face from one of his many media appearances accompanying the documentary film he directed called "Swing State" which came out in 2008.  After doing a bunch of on camera hosting on the East Coast, Jason has settled in LA to focus on writing, acting and hosting.  These are just a few of my personal favorites from our shoot today.

What makes LA Headshots different from NY Headshots?

The most blaring difference is that the best LA headshots are shot with natural light.  Since its bright and sunny in Los Angles almost every day of the year, LA photographers are able to shoot all of their clients in the best light known to man - Natural Light.  The first picture to the left was shot with natural light.  See how nice and warm the lighting is?  The second picture to the left was shot with a flash - the  lighting is cold and harsh - it looks like a NY headshot.

Flashes or strobe lighting is great for print and high fashion photography but it doesn't look like film lighting.  Since Commercials, Television Shows and Films are shot with gigantic hot lights that replicate sun light - Directors and producers want to know what you'll look like under the lights that they're using on set, which is why everyone in LA prefers "Natural Light Headshots".

The other main advantage of natural light photography is that it allows the photographer to fire off up to 6 photos a second - replicating the feel of being captured by a motion picture camera. With flashes the photographer can only take one shot every 1.5 seconds which often leads to them missing the "moment".

The third reason the top LA Headshot Photographers work looks different from New York photographers is STYLE.  Every photographer has a different style.  Broadway Playbill headshots have a more old school vibe.  Often they're black and white, posed and 80's feeling to me.  That style of photography just doesn't cut it in the fast paced casting world of Hollywood. Headshots need to represent you, speak for you, make you interesting to buyers and get you in the room to audition.

So you're wondering, "Where do I start?"  I recommend the photographers gallery on LA Casting.  You can browse a variety of the top headshot photographers and see who's work stands out and speaks to you.

Lastly give the photographer a call - speak with them and see if you jive with them.  They're is nothing worse than working with someone you just don't connect with.  You've got a lot of choices in LA,  just be sure to do your research.  Get great pictures, get out, audition, book!  Live your dreams!

Shoot with Christian

A few weeks ago I worked with a very familiar model you may recognize.  Christian is a  very well established model with top representation around the globe.  Over the last few years he's been developing his acting chops and now calls Los Angeles home.  Christian was sent to me by his commercial agent who was looking for some solid non-modely commercial actor headshots. We captured a variety of looks which have helped led to a steady stream of auditions for him.
